What is Shou Sugi Ban?

Shou Sugi Ban, also known as charred wood cladding, burnt wood siding, or carbonized wood, is a traditional Japanese technique used to preserve and enhance wood. The process involves burning the surface of the wood, cooling it, brushing off excess char, and sealing it with natural oils. This treatment makes the wood highly resistant to moisture, pests, and decay while creating a deep black, textured finish. Originally used for cedar siding in Japan, it is now popular in modern architecture for exterior cladding, interior walls, and furniture. The controlled charring process improves durability and adds a bold, organic aesthetic to contemporary designs.
