What Are Fluorescent Colors and How Do Architects Use Them?

Fluorescent colors are ultra-bright hues that seem to glow, especially under UV (ultraviolet) light. This effect happens because fluorescent pigments absorb UV light, which is invisible to the human eye, and re-emit it as visible light, making these colors appear far brighter than standard ones. Examples of common fluorescent colors include fluorescent pink (#FF1493), fluorescent yellow (#FFFF00), fluorescent green (#32CD32), and fluorescent orange (#FF7F00).

In architecture, fluorescent colors are highly valued for their visibility and eye-catching quality. Architects often use them on wayfinding signs, emergency exits, and in public spaces to ensure visibility even in low-light settings. Additionally, fluorescent colors are popular in art installations, accent walls, and interior features to add vibrant energy and create strong focal points. Their intense, glowing quality brings a unique, dynamic effect that not only draws attention but also makes a bold, modern statement in architectural design.
